The Language of Suspense: English Conversation with Hitchcock (B2/C1)
This B2/C1 English conversation course uses the legendary films of Alfred Hitchcock as a springboard for discussion, vocabulary building, and cultural exploration. Over 13 sessions, students will watch and analyze classic thrillers such as Vertigo, Rear Window, Psycho, and North by Northwest. Each class blends targeted language practice with lively conversation, film analysis, and creative activities.
Students will expand vocabulary related to suspense, psychology, and mystery, sharpen pronunciation and fluency, and strengthen critical thinking skills by debating themes such as morality, fear, deception, and identity. In addition to analyzing scenes, characters, and film techniques, participants will also be encouraged to create alternative endings, imagine characters’ choices, and even try writing a short suspenseful story of their own.
The focus is on participation rather than testing—your voice and ideas drive the class. By the end, you’ll not only improve your conversational English but also gain deeper insight into why Hitchcock remains the “Master of Suspense.”
Students may watch the films between sessions, with flexible viewing options: screenings at the DAI, borrowing from the DAI or local libraries, streaming online, or purchasing the DVD set. They also have the option of obtaining a 5€ DAI library card valid for the duration of the course, if they so wish.
