America 250: Nürnberg blickt auf die USA

250 Years of the USA. An occasion not only to reflect on the history of the United States, but also on the multifaceted relations between America and Germany. As part of the America 250 anniversary year, the German-American Institute in Nuremberg invites you to an intergenerational panel discussion that will examine the development of German-American relations from a Nuremberg perspective.

The focus will be on how relations between Nuremberg and the U.S. have changed over the decades and what significance they hold today. Special attention will be given to the long-standing city partnership between Nuremberg and Atlanta, which has fostered transatlantic exchange for many years.

To kick off the event, Prof. Dr. Volker Depkat will provide a historical overview of Nuremberg’s relations with the United States. Following this, Dr. Norbert Schürgers, former head of the Office for International Relations of the City of Nuremberg, will discuss the origins and development of the long-standing partnership with Atlanta.

Another program highlight focuses on German-American connections in everyday life. The Amerikahaus Youth Club (AYC) will present a short film featuring interviews with Germans and Americans. The segments offer personal perspectives on transatlantic friendship, ranging from sports and youth exchanges to growing up in binational families and the involvement of German-American associations and networks.

Following the screening, Volker Depkat and Norbert Schürgers—moderated jointly by Prof. Dr. Andreas Falke—will discuss the past, present, and future of German-American relations with representatives from different generations. The audience is cordially invited to participate in the discussion by asking questions and sharing their own experiences.

Volker Depkat is a historian and professor of American Studies at the University of Regensburg. His main areas of research include the history of the United States from its colonial beginnings to the present from continental, hemispheric, and transatlantic perspectives; the history of European-American relations; biographical and autobiographical research; visual culture studies; and comparative federalism research. His latest book, "The American Revolution", was published this spring in the Beck Wissen series.
