The Weekend is a sharp, tender, and unflinching portrait of female friendship, aging, and the secrets we keep from those closest to us.

The story follows three women in their seventies—Jude, a fiercely independent and rigid former restaurant manager; Wendy, an intellectual public intellectual grieving the recent loss of her partner; and Liz, a once-brilliant actress whose life and career are fraying at the edges.

The trio reunites for a bittersweet Christmas weekend at a beach house in New South Wales to clean out the home of their late friend Sylvia. Without her, the remaining three women face challenges in their relationships, revealing grief and hidden tensions as they navigate aging, shared history, and fears of isolation.

Wood approaches her characters with a brilliant mix of sharp wit, dark humor, and profound empathy. She avoids sentimental clichés about older women, instead delivering a deeply honest, sometimes brutal, but ultimately moving exploration of what it means to grow old together when the foundational structures of your life begin to give way.
