American universities have long been associated with the ideals of free inquiry, open debate, and the pursuit of knowledge. Yet in recent years, these principles have come under increasing pressure as political and ideological commitments have shaped the boundaries of acceptable speech, teaching, and research. What happens when academic freedom and the pursuit of truth come into conflict with claims made in the name of social justice and inclusion or with demands for political conformity?

Drawing on prominent controversies at Evergreen State College, the dispute surrounding Harvard biologist Carole Hooven, and the responses of leading universities to antisemitism following the Hamas attacks of October 7, 2023, the lecture examines the politicization of American higher education and its implications for academic freedom, scholarly standards, and institutional responsibility.

Finally, the lecture considers possible responses to these developments. Can American universities restore a culture of open inquiry and intellectual independence? What role should government intervention play in protecting these principles, and how can it do so without imposing a new form of ideological conformity?

Prof. Dr. Pascal Fischer holds the Chair of English and American Cultural Studies at the University of Bamberg. His research interests include Jewish-American literature, the Romantic period in Britain, and contemporary American culture.
